What does it mean to call an audible in football?
Football Concept: Call an Audible
To call an audible in football happens when the quarterback goes up to the line of scrimmage, sees a defensive alignment he wasn’t expecting, and adjusts by yelling out a new play. You call this ‘calling an audible’. This can happen at any time. Some coaches trust their quarterbacks more than others so some quarterbacks will call an audible more frequently than others. Less experienced quarterbacks or those new to a system may only have one audible they may call.
For example, they may call a play in the huddle (via the coach) and then go to the line of scrimmage. The quarterback would then look at what the defense is doing and may call an audible if he sees a blitz package to change to a quick slant route instead of a play action pass.
How can you use the expression ‘Call an Audible’ in everyday life?
The football expression ‘to call an audible’ truly means that you made a last minute change to a previous decision, even if it is a small change. You go outside for a run and then realize that it’s raining. You might have to call an audible and go to the gym instead.
Perhaps, at work and you are developing a new product and just a month before the product is to launch, your competitor beats you to it. Now you have to call an audible and adjust your product to be something better than theirs. Lots of ways to use it. Be creative.
