Now that we have the common ground that people just like to play and watch sports for whatever reason, we can get to how the game is played.
What is the object of football?
To win! The premise of the game is to score more points than your opponent. Each game is completely separate from the others and winning one has no impact on any previous game. The entire object of football is for the funny shaped, oblong ball affectionately referred to as the pigskin sometimes, to pass over the goal line for a score or through the uprights for points.
Additionally, each team’s overall record of wins and losses at the end of the regular season of play, does matter too. In reality, it is the larger objective of each game – to accumulate enough wins to move on to the post season. For college that is bowl games and the more recently created playoffs for the top 4 rated teams. For professional football, that is a true playoff setup where it is ‘win or go home.’
