NFL 53 Man Roster

Michael Sam announces he is gay

What is the NFL 53 Man Roster?

In the NFL, each team is allowed 53 active players. After the pre-season is complete, there is a deadline for each team to decide on their official 53 man roster and all those that don’t make the team are then eligible for waivers to play for another team.

The ‘waiver’ period only lasts a short period of time and if a player who did not make his team’s 53 man roster is requested by another team, he can be added to the new team’s 53 man roster and is ‘waived’ from his obligations to his existing team.

If he does not get picked up in the waiver period, then he can get picked up for a practice squad. Don’t worry, practice squad players still get paid! They also continue to grow and develop and have a chance to get pulled up later (in a way, kind of like the minor leagues in baseball).

This year, the NFL 53 Man Rosters were decided on Saturday at 4pm and the waiver period ended at noon today. Over 700 players were ‘let go’. According to Brian McIntyre, 203 of the 256 draft picks from this year made it to active rosters. That’s not too shabby.

Notable cuts from NFL teams for the 53 man rosters:

Michael Sam – first openly gay player in the NFL did not make the St. Louis Rams squad. Primarily because of the strong existing defensive line and tough competition from another rookie.

Tajh Boyd – standout Clemson quarterback did not make the NY Jets 53 man roster. He will most definitely get picked up by someone.

Ben Jarvis Green-Ellis – running back for Cinncinati was released after several good years there

Conor Shaw – last year’s QB at South Carolina did not get through the stiff competition in Cleveland with Johnny Manziel.

Jordan Lynch – former QB from Northern Illinois that was trying to make a change to a running back!! That’s not something that happens every day in the NFL.

Champ Bailey – much loved former Bulldog was released by the New Orleans Saints. He is 36 years old.
