The Teams: University of Georgia (Bulldogs) vs. Clemson (Tigers)
Date, Time and Location: Saturday, August 31st @ 8:00 p.m. EST. The game is being played in Death Valley (Clemson).
Why the Game is Important: It’s rare that a season opener is between two top-10 ranked teams. Georgia enters the season ranked #5 and Clemson is #8. Early predictions have Georgia playing in the SEC Championship while Clemson is predicted to go to and win the ACC Championship. These two teams used to play each other almost every year. However, this will be their first matchup in 10 years. The last time they played, Georgia blew them away with a 30-0 victory. It was the last time the Tigers were shut out. Aside from future championships on the line, these teams are also playing for pride.
Quite a Rivalry: Everyone who does not play for an orange team, generally hates teams that are, Georgia is no exception about Clemson. Throw in the fact these two teams are only 80 miles apart, the atmosphere of “Death Valley”, opening game for two teams with eyes set on greatness, and this is sure to be a really awesome game!
Battle of the QB’s: UGA’s Aaron Murray has 10,901 passing yards and 95 touchdowns. Clemson’s Tajh Boyd is not far behind with 8,818 total yards and 89 touchdowns. They are both seniors and they are both out to win a championship! (Hint: those are impressive numbers)
Why UGA will win: Georgia is returning 12 starters from last year. There are 9 starters returning on offense, including Murray but only 3 on defense. Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall are both bigger and stronger and will dominate in the backfield. Plus, Georgia is the better team.
Why Clemson will win: Clemson is also returning 12 starters, 6 on offense and 6 on defense. Boyd was last year’s ACC Player of the year. They also have wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who has 1927 receiving yards and 16 combined touchdowns in 2 years. He also has racked up 1083 yards and one touchdown on kick off returns (Hint: that’s a lot!). Clemson also has the favor of a key UGA player not following the rules and being suspended for the game and playing at home gives them an advantage. That stadium will be rumbling for sure!
Who will win: No doubt this will be a close game. The team that plays the best defense will come out the victor on this one…by a nose!
One Liners for the Game:
- I love the sound of the name Tajh Boyd.
- I wonder what crazy thing Dabo Swinney (pronounced ‘sween-nee’) will do or say today.
- If Aaron Murray has a great year, he could win the Heisman.
- I still can’t believe someone vandalized Howard’s Rock – doesn’t anyone care about sacred tradition anymore.
- If Mark Richt pulls this one out, maybe he’ll actually crack a smile.
